God, who here has sweet cravings? I have since I was about eight years old. Candy and cake and chocolate and ice cream and donuts and all things luscious and soft and creamy and delicious and sweet have ALWAYS been my downfall.
Hershey’s Kisses? I can eat a whole bag – STAT.
Cadbury’s Mini Eggs? Gone in 60 seconds.
Ten-stack carrot cake from the Cheesecake Factory? Pttth… challenge me a little bit, will you?
And for the love of God, don’t keep a bag of Oreos in the house, or they won’t last more than a half hour, at best.
So needless to say, I had a problem. And I’d had that problem for YEARS,
And then, as I was reading my 100th diet book, called The Diet Cure, it talked about amino acid deficiencies that might be causing absurd and unbalanced cravings.
The book didn’t help me lose any weight, but it sure did help to fix my sugar cravings!
Apparently L-Glutamine deficiency causes sugar cravings.
I did not know this.
And I figured, what the hell, I’ll try it. If it works, super duper. If it doesn’t, I’ve lost what – twelve dollars?
So I headed out to my local trusty grocery store to get some of this L-Glutamine – because contrary to popular belief, you can get some useful supplements outside of Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods (or Amazon) – and I started taking it. I began with two horse pills a day, one first thing in the morning and then one about lunchtime. It took a couple of weeks to notice, but…
I can tell you… it WORKS.
I could not believe it. I STILL can’t believe it!
But yes, I can attest, L-Glutamine works to stop sweet cravings. For the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE, I don’t want candy all day long, all year long, all life long.
In fact, I could live without sweets for the rest of my life, if I had to.
(I’m glad I don’t have to though)
But it’s under control, I’ve even got Hershey’s Kisses and peanut M&Ms in the house, and sometimes I – gasp! – forget they’re here.
And I don’t even have to keep taking the supplements! After about two months, I noticed that I wasn’t dreaming of jelly beans anymore, so I just stopped taking them. As mentioned, they are amino acids, which are a naturally occurring substance that we are often deficient in, and thus sweet cravings result. Give your body what it needs, and it doesn’t scream at you.
I LOVE that I don’t have to keep taking them to keep the cravings at bay. LOVE. IT.
I don’t pretend to know much about this stuff: if you want to know more, definitely read the book. All I can attest is that THEY WORK!
And it’s my job to tell you these things. 🙂
However, I do occasionally get a nudge for something sweet, a nudge that I know isn’t really very normal. So, I just take one L-Glutamine, and it goes away.
So, I wanted to tell you about these guys! If you want to read the book, I’d start with a library copy. But if you decide you want to own it, you can get it here.
Book or not, if you have trouble with sweet cravings, get yourself some L-Glutamine. It really, seriously, WORKS.
